Tongji University is one of China's leading universities under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, and is listed on "Project 985" and "Project 211". Tongji has valued the balanced development of education, research, outreach, and culture inheritance and innovation.
The history of Tongji can be traced back to 1907 when a German Medical School was founded by Erich Paulun, a German doctor in Shanghai. After being renamed Tongji German Medical School the following year, it was formally established as a university in 1923. It became National Tongji University in 1927, one of the seven earliest national universities of China. Following a nationwide campaign of restructuring universities in 1952, Tongji became an engineering-intensive university with a focus in civil engineering and architecture, which is second to none in terms of scale and number of disciplines. By 2007 when it was celebrating its centennial, Tongji had become a comprehensive, international, research-oriented university with distinct features and global influence. In 2013, the university proposed its vision of "a sustainability-oriented, world-class university".
The Department of Geotechnical Engineering in the College of Civil Engineering at Tongji University was established in 1958. It is one of the first departments engaged in the education and research of geotechnical engineering and underground engineering in China. Integrating the traditional disciplines in the field of civil engineering such as structural engineering (underground structure), geotechnical engineering and geological engineering, the department boasts a long history, strong comprehensive strength and remarkable professional peculiarity at the University. The department is responsible for educating and supervising undergraduates and postgraduates majoring in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, and Harbor, Waterway and Coastal Engineering. It enjoys great prestige both at home and abroad for its outstanding performance in teaching and research. Professional talents it produced are now working all over the world.
Professor Bai Yun's research group was founded in 2009, under the Department of Geotechnical Engineering in the College of Civil Engineering at Tongji University. Aimed at cultivating a new type of civil engineers with well-founded professional knowledge and international view, the research group value students' comprehensive abilities, including English, project-planning, communication, etc. Students are also encouraged to participate in international conferences and exchange projects to broaden their vision and discover the developing directions of civil engineering.
The research areas of the group consists of design and construction techniques of submerged tunnels, design and construction techniques of shield tunnels, non-excavation construction method, building construction techniques, road construction, NATM, deep foundation pit design and construction techniques, soft soil foundation treatment techniques, urban underground space exploitation and research, risk management research, bridge construction techniques, site monitoring techniques, indoor structure test, and pneumatic excavation of lunar surface.
